Growth Necessitates a New Student Center
When the Student Center was built in 1972, its location, size and what departments would be located in it were debated. The Student Center housed the bookstore, Counseling Services offices, Student Financial Aid office, food services, Director of Student Activities' office, manager of the Student Center's office, recreation rooms, study room and private dining room.
With the continued growth of student enrollment, the expanded services offered to the students and the increase in student traffic, the need for a new and larger Student Center became paramount.
On March 11, 1994, it was motioned and approved by the Board of Trustees to acquire, construct, equip and furnish a building on the campus to be used as the Student Center.
On August 9, 1994, the Board of Trustees accepted the bid of D. M. Ward Construction Co. to build the new 70,000-square-foot Student Center.
On February 14, 1995, the Board voted to name the new building the J. Paul Jewell Student Center.
The new Student Center contains two levels. The upper level contains the Dean of Student Services' office, Counseling, Admissions, Financial Aid, Academic Resource Center, Wyandotte County Regional Prevention Center, Women's Resource Center, the College Nurse's office and a lounge area.
The lower level gives access to the campus bookstore, the Blue Devil Deli, Scooter's Coffeehouse, game room, two meeting rooms, TV room, a lecture room, and the Director of Student Activities' office.
