Kansas City Kansas Community College wrapped up one of the best non-conference starts in history Monday with a sweep of junior varsity opponents. – the Lady Blue Devils taking a 78-51 home court win over Haskell while the men were winning at Saint Mary 99-64.

The win was ninth in a row for the unbeaten Blue Devil men, the best start ever for a KCKCC men’s team, while the Lady Blue Devils’ 8-1 start is the best since the 1997 season.

However, the road toughens immediately as both teams are at Highland Wednesday at 5 and 7 p.m. for the opening of Jayhawk Conference play. The earliest start in conference history, the Blue Devils’ conference home opener comes Saturday against Labette (2 and 4 p.m.)

Michelle Selbe had 22 points, Sarah Craft 16 points and nine rebounds and Ashley Wham a career high 11 points and six rebounds to lead the KCKCC women past Haskell. Lacie Schreibere and Shannon Carlin chipped in with nine points and four rebounds and Alyssa Rushton had six rebounds in the win.

The Blue Devil men led only 44-37 at halftime at Saint Mary before blowing the game opening with 63.3 percent second half shooting. KCKCC got career highs from freshmen Monty Taylor and Hal Payne. Taylor had 20 points on 7 of 9 shooting along with six rebounds and three assists while Payne scored 17 points and grabbed a game high eight rebounds. Derick Denny also had 20 points including 6 of 10 three-pointers, Dennis Tinnon 10 points and Scott Fruehling 9.
